Academy Pianist

Gerard Power has over ten years experience as a piano accompanist for ballet. For some of that period, he has worked with Northern Ballet in various capacities including as a touring company pianist.

He has also worked with groups such as Mark Morris Dance Group and Nederlands Dans Theater.  In addition, he has worked with the Royal Ballet School, Central Ballet, Royal Academy of Dance, York Scholars, Yorkshire Assembly, and SLP College.

For his primary degree from Trinity College Dublin, Gerard majored in piano performance through final recital. He studied piano with John Gilbert and Malcolm Proud. As a pianist, he performed in diverse venues such as Ireland’s National Concert Hall and the Royal Dublin Society Concert Hall. He was also pianist for the Irish Premiere of Louis Andriessen’s Dances.

He was lecturer in piano performance on the degree course at Waterford Institute of Technology. As a violinist, he achieved distinctions in all grades with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and obtained a performer's diploma from Trinity College London. He studied violin with Fionnuala Hunt and toured with Opera Theatre Company as first violin.

Latterly, Gerard completed a Masters in composition from Trinity College Dublin (M.Litt) and a Doctorate in composition from the University of York (DPhil). He studied with Roger Marsh and David Blake. He attended the Darmstadt International Summer School for New Music in Germany and was composer-in-residence at Visby International Centre for Composers in Sweden. During 2006-2008, he was a shortlisted composer of the Society for the Promotion of New Music (SPNM). Gerard's compositional output to date includes orchestral, chamber, instrumental and choral works. His work has been performed at international festivals and broadcast on radio in countries as wide ranging as Slovenia and Hong Kong. Recent performances include his work, Allusion for tuba quartet, at the ISCM World Music Days in Zagreb in April 2011.
