Matthew Koon

Matthew is from Manchester. He trained as an Associate of the Academy of Northern Ballet before taking up full-time vocational training with English National Ballet School. He joined Northern Ballet in 2013.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Manchester.

At what age did you start dancing?

I started dancing at the age of two.

Where did you train?

I trained at English National Ballet School and before that Centre Pointe Dance School.

What are your favourite Northern Ballet roles to dance?

Mercutio (Romeo & Juliet), Albrecht (Giselle), Puck and Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).

Career highlights

Dancing the male duet from Lar Lubovitch’s Concerto Six Twenty-Two at Northern Ballet’s debut at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre in 2014 and dancing the Young Prince in Cinderella in 2013.

What do you like most about being a dancer?

The never ending quest for perfection. I live the everyday challenge of trying to make something better than it was before may it be the execution of a step, the portrayal of a role or pushing myself to give something more in the part I am dancing.

If you could adapt one work into a ballet what would it be?

House of Flying Daggers.

What is your favourite book?

Mao’s Last Dancer by Li Cunxin.

How do you like to relax?

With lots of sleep and watching movies.
