If you’ve been following Channel 4’s Big Ballet last week you saw the dancers starting their training and auditioning for parts in Swan Lake. I tweeted at the time how fantastic the professional Northern Ballet dancers looked and they were almost matched by the splendour of the Northern Ballet studios (some scenes were also filmed at our neighbours Yorkshire Dance).

Born in the UK, Dominic is rapidly becoming acknowledged as a young conductor of distinction, whose career already embraces opera, ballet and symphonic work as well as contemporary music and orchestral training. He was a permanent staff conductor for the Royal Ballet from 2008-10, and is now a regular guest conductor for the company. He has also conducted frequently for Northern Ballet, Scottish Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. He was Music Director of the King’s College London Symphony Orchestra from 2009-12 and is Principal Conductor of the London Academy Premiere Sinfonia.

As a recently graduated student with a highly useful but extremely non-vocational degree in History I have found myself in that limbo stage of attempting to sample every avenue the world of work has to offer. It is to this end that I find myself enjoying an interesting and enlightening week of work experience with the fundraising team at Northern Ballet.
One of the best things about The Violin at the Movies for me is that I’ll be working with my old friend Gavin Sutherland. Long term followers of Northern Ballet will remember that Gavin used to be Assistant Conductor here many years ago, before leaving to pursue a freelance career as conductor, pianist and arranger.
