5 things you need to know about Romeo and Juliet

As we get ready to open Les Ballets de Monte Carlo's Romeo and Juliet at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh this week, here are a few things you need to know about the history of this iconic story...

1. There have been more than 27 opera, 40 screen and 80 choreographic versions of Romeo and Juliet including the Baz Luhrmann film starring Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Christopher Gable took over as Artistic Director or Northern Ballet Theatre in 1987 and in 1988 the Company staged a lavish production of The Amazing Adventures of Don Quixote, choreographed by Michael Pink.

This photo shows dancer Julia Sommers as Dulcina with Christopher Gable as the eponymous Don Q in the dream sequence from act 2.

This week's trip to the archive reveals an image from 1986 of Ancient Airs and Dances choreographed by Michael Corder with music by Ottorino Respighi and designs from Charles Maude.

Ancient Airs and Dances received its World Premiére at Bradford Alhambra Theatre on June 16 1986 and this photo was taken by the celebrated Leslie E. Spatt.

Accessible Dance at Northern Ballet

I have recently been on a two day training course with Stopgap Dance Company exploring inclusive dance teaching. It was an inspiring couple of days and I really enjoyed meeting different teachers and dancers from across Yorkshire. The time and space to work with different teachers allowed me to research deeper in to different techniques to ensure our offer of dance at Northern Ballet is accessible, innovative and inspiring.

We have been working with Bedford Interactive through funding from the Arts Council England to develop software and content that can be used to develop dance appreciation skills and we would like feedback on using it.
