Magical, incredible, spellbinding Cleopatra in the words of Ed Vazey
On Wednesday 18 May we held a dinner to celebrate the London premiere of Cleopatra and to raise much needed funds for Northern Ballet. Guests were treated to a champagne reception thanks to Champagne Warehouse and attended a performance of Cleopatra at Sadler's Wells before heading to Moro restaurant for a delicious meal and the chance to bid on a number of exclusive auction prizes. The event was organised by Board members Veronica Wadley, Denise Jagger and Victoria Tomlinson and our thanks go to them, the whole London committee, all the people who attended the event as well as to Welcome to Yorkshire who supported the evening which raised more than £35,000 for Northern Ballet.
Ed Vazey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries attended the event and made an impromptu speech where he thanked Northern Ballet for an "absolutely magical evening", he described Cleopatra an "an incredible ballet" and said Martha Leebolt's performance was "spellbinding". He continued to tell the guests that he had a daughter called Martha who is about to start ballet lessons and invited Martha Leebolt to come and share her experience with his daughter.
Ed also commented on funding for the arts, "We are very lucky to have a good system of funding for the arts. It is important that arts organisations also earn their own money and they depend on people like you to support them." He then went on to tell the guests at the dinner that their support was "massively and hugely appreciated" and is something we couldn't agree with more.
