Andrew Tomlinson is in Level 6 of the Professional Programme. Last summer he received a full scholarship to train with National Ballet School in Canada for 4 weeks. Andrew told us more about his experience.
'The National Ballet School in Canada is one of the top ballet schools in the world so when the Academy told me that they had arranged for me to go and train there for a month over the summer I was over the moon. I felt very privileged to have such a fantastic opportunity and feel that I have benefitted greatly from my trip.
'Firstly it was so exciting to go to Canada for a month and secondly the chance to spend four weeks with such fantastic teachers and great class members was brilliant. I found it really interesting to see other students my age from across the world as it informed me of where I am at with my training. I made a lot of good friends and we are all keeping in touch.
'There were other international exchange students there and we all stayed in the same house which was connected to the main school. The students who train at the National Ballet all year round were really welcoming (and also really good!).
'Whilst I was there I took classes in upper body strengthening, ballet, allegro, variations and modern contemporary. I found the classes challenging but in a good way! I had such a fun time over there taking part in all the classes and at the weekends we had activities planned for us such as a visit to Niagara Falls and a trip to Canada's Wonderland (a theme park) which was great fun.
'Overall I had a fantastic time in Toronto and will always remember my summer at the National Ballet School. I hope one day I might be able to go back.'
