The Nutcracker audio brochure

Hello and welcome to Northern Ballet’s audio brochure.

Northern Ballet is the UK’s leading narrative dance company, touring extensively throughout the UK and internationally. Northern Ballet is unique in bringing together stunning classical dance, vivid, exciting theatre and live music to create productions based on well-known stories.

Northern Ballet has paved the way in creating accessible opportunities for visually impaired audiences to engage with first class entertainment. The company provides an ideal introduction for first time ballet visitors and the quality, originality and theatricality keeps audiences coming back for more.

This recording provides an insight into an audio described day with Northern Ballet. We have devised our own unique program of activities that support the audio description.

We encourage you to arrive at the theatre at 10.15am to join us on a tour of the stage, scenery and props. You can get up close to discover the scale and texture of the set, and stand in the place of the dancers. Following the tour, you can take part in a workshop designed to let you meet the dancers, be creative and above all have fun exploring the shapes and quality of the movement. You do not need to be an experienced dancer. You can enjoy the workshop from the comfort of your chair, or for the more energetic why not have a go and partner up with one of our dancers and let them guide you through a scene from the ballet step by step?

Don’t worry if you can’t be at the theatre all day our Audio Describer will give a detailed description of the set, costumes, scenario and characters 30 minutes before the performance in the pre-show notes.

The performance will then be brought to life in your minds eye with a detailed description of the movement, action and drama that takes place to the music played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

The Nutcracker

Christmas Eve in the twinkling drawing room of the Edwards' family home. Amidst the commotion the fire crackles and the pile of presents grows ever taller.

Uncle Drosslemeyer's curious box of performing toys captivates the children and adults alike, but it is the wooden Nutcracker doll that enchants young Clara most. Share in Clara's adventures as she is swept away by her Nutcracker Prince into a magical winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy.

Northern Ballet's The Nutcracker brings to life everyone's favourite Christmas story, with their unique magic scattered throughout. Performed to Tchaikovsky's enduring score, played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia, The Nutcracker awakens the childlike imagination in us all.

The Nutcracker will be performed at the Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 18 – Sunday 30 December
