Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario in Canada.
At what age did you start dancing?
I must have been about 3 years old.
Where did you train?
Which Northern Ballet role would you most like to dance?
There are so many Northern Ballet roles I aspire to dance. To carry a ballet from beginning to end and relate a powerful story would be magical.
My career is just beginning! Nonetheless, going on tour with Northern Ballet during my year with the Graduate Professional Programme and being part of some creative processes have been highlights so far.
What do you like most about being a dancer?
Performing! Often as I do a curtain call I’m thinking ‘I can’t believe this is my job!’ It is such a privilege to be able to do what you love most in the world as a profession.
If you could adapt one work into a ballet what would it be?
It would have to be Amélie. I once had a stroke of inspiration as I listened to Yann Tiersen’s soundtrack and thought what a beautiful ballet it would make; it also happens to be one of my favourite films. Madame Bovary and Great Expectations would also translate very well.
What is your favourite book?
Oh, there are so many! Some of my favourite heart-wrenchers are Wuthering Heights and Angela’s Ashes. Novels like Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four have a resonant societal relevance and Michael Pollan is a favourite contemporary author of mine, I love In Defence of Food.
What is your favourite post-show meal?
Often I am quite hungry so it’s usually my version of fast food. This could be eggs with roasted sweet potatoes and steamed greens, a soba noodle bowl with veggies and a spicy Asian sauce, or if I’ve prepared in advance, a delicious home-cooked meal that just needs to be reheated.
How do you like to relax?
I love to cook. I often joke that chopping vegetables is therapeutic for me! I also love to read a good novel and listen to music. One of my all time favourite escapes is to be outdoors, swimming in a lake, hiking, canoeing and just enjoying nature’s bounty.
If you weren’t a dancer what would you be?
Maybe an actress (anything to avoid a desk job!). Alternatively I feel I could impart some wisdom as a nutritionist.
