Welcome to Diary of a Ballet Geek

Hello. My name is Lauren and I am a ballet-aholic.

To be honest, the whole thing snuck up on me. I never expected that in December 2009, when I innocently decided to take my Mum and Sister to see Northern Ballet's Peter Pan as an alternative to panto, it would light a spark within me that now even all the water in the English Channel would struggle to extinguish.

This week, we celebrated World Book Day and wanted to ask you what has been your favourite story Northern Ballet has transformed into a ballet and why?

From William Shakespeare to Charles Dickens, Northern Ballet has created productions inspired by stories from some of the world’s most-loved authors.

Visit to Bramley to find Cinderella's set

What happens to our beautiful sets when they are not on tour I hear you ask, well Northern Ballet have a dedicated workshop and storage building known as Bramley, in West Leeds, where all our sets live. Andy Waddington, our Techincal Director, kindly let me sneak my camera in to have a look at our Cinderella set up close.

Audio Described performances making headlines

Northern Ballet are one of a very few number of dance companies in England to regularly offer audio described performances of their productions for the visually impaired.  Audio description of live performances, like the audio description service on television, describes the action using descriptive rather than technical language, for those who cannot see it.

How many pointe shoes do we use?

Depending on the repertoire for the season, Northern Ballet use approximately 2,200 pairs of pointe shoes each year. Using the average size pointe shoe, if you were to line them up, toe to heel, it would be well over half a mile!

Short ballets tour times

We are often asked why our Short Ballets are scheduled as they are, especially about the times of performances.

There are two parts of the Short Ballets tour - from March to April where we take it to as many theatres as is possible and then from May when the short ballets joins the main tour.
