The final week of the season is upon us but there's no resting on our laurels as we prepare to open our Mixed Programme at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in our Leeds city-centre home.
This week we welcome our dancers back to Leeds after being out on tour for for almost a month. It's nice to have them back in the building where rehearsals and creativity are top of the agenda as everyone prepares for the final performances of the season with the Mixed Programme at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre.
Last week the Company was in London, and what a week it was! Our first ever performances in Covent Garden and our first triple bill outside of Leeds in recent years! After being invited to watch the Mixed Programme rehearsals during the previous week I was already highly anticipating our arrival at the Royal Opera House (ROH) and by the time my delightful Cockney cabbie pulled up outside on of London's most famous buildings I was absolutely jittering with excitement.
Concerto Six Twenty-Two, choreographed by Lar Lubovitch, was commissioned by Centre National de Danse (Angers, France) and premièred in 1986 at Carnegie Hall in New York. Although men dancing together has existed in modern dance almost from the beginning, Concerto Six Twenty-Two brought a new freedom of expression to this concept and, while the piece does not tell a literal story, it indelibly portrays the depth of friendship expressed within a supportive and caring relationship between men.
Lar Lubovitch discusses his work, Concerto Six Twenty-Two, which we are performing as part of our 2014 Mixed Programme in London and Leeds. Book for London - Thu 8 to Sat 10 May 2014 Book for Leeds - Wed 18 to Sat 21 Jun 2014
It's an exciting week ahead as we prepare to head down to London for our Company debut at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio Theatre.
This time next week the Company will be in residence at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio Theatre with a Mixed Programme. It's an important occasion for two reasons as it's our first ever performance at the famous Covent Garden venue and this is also the first time we've performed a triple bill outside of Leeds in recent years. If you haven't seen Northern Ballet in a Mixed Programme before then you've never seen Northern Ballet quite like this!
Lar Lubovitch trained at The Julliard School and founded the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in New York in 1968. Now celebrating its 45th anniversary, with over 120 dance pieces, it has gained an international reputation as one of America’s top dance companies. Lar’s works are also included in the repertoires of major dance companies throughout the world.
