Audio brochure transcript

Hello and welcome to Northern Ballet’s audio brochure.

Northern Ballet is the UK’s leading narrative dance company, touring extensively throughout the UK and internationally. Northern Ballet is unique in bringing together stunning classical dance, vivid, exciting theatre and live music to create productions based on well-known stories.

Northern Ballet has paved the way in creating accessible opportunities for visually impaired audiences to engage with dance. The company provides an ideal introduction for first time ballet visitors and the quality, originality and theatricality keeps audiences coming back for more.

We have devised our own unique program of activities that support the audio description and this recording provides an insight into an audio described day with Northern Ballet.

We encourage you to arrive at the theatre at 11am to take part in an insight workshop which introduces the shapes and quality of the movement from the production with the aid of Company dancers.   You don’t need to dance to attend the insight workshop.  You can enjoy it by listening to descriptions of movements from the ballet and feeling the dancers as they demonstrate some moves.  Or if you want to know how the movements feel, you can have a go and partner up with one of our dancers and let them guide you through steps from the ballet. Following the insight workshop you can attend a touch tour to hear a description of the scenery and to feel the props and costumes from the production.

Don’t worry if you can’t be at the theatre all day as our Audio Describer will give a detailed description of the set, costumes, scenario and characters 15 minutes before the performance in the pre-show notes.

The performance will then be brought to life in your minds eye with a detailed description of the movement, action and drama that takes place to the music played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Cinderella

Set in Imperial Russia at a time when superstitious people believe in the possibility of magic, Northern Ballet’s new adaptation of this classic fairytale sees heartbreak turn to joy as the unstoppable power of young love conquers all.
A beautiful summer’s day turns into tragedy. Devastated by the loss of her father, and excluded by her cruel stepmother and sisters, Cinderella finds solace on the frozen lake where she first sees her Prince Charming.  As romance blossoms, a magical encounter in a market place changes Cinderella’s destiny.

Journey through elegant Russia, with breathtaking winter scenes and opulent ballrooms accompanied by a new score played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, you will not want to miss this unforgettable ballet.

Cinderella will be performed at The Grand Opera House in Belfast from Wednesday 5 – Saturday 8 November.  The audio described day is on Saturday 8 November.

The Insight Workshop starts at 11am and the touch tour is from 12.45 - 1.15pm. These are free to Visually Impaired Audiences and their companion.
The Audio Described performance starts at 2.30pm

Ticket prices range from £18.50 - £36.50
