Preparing for Sinfonia performances
The chamber music series has been a really exciting development for the Sinfonia. It's lovely for us to come out of the darkness of the pit and out into the bright lights of the stage!
I've been with Northern Ballet since 2000 and am principal clarinet. In this concert I will be joined by Geoff Allan, our leader, Raimonda Koco who is a first violinist, Hannah Horton on viola and Sasah Volpov will play the cello.
We decided to open the season with music for clarinet and strings. The programme for the concert will be Tartini's Concertino, then Sasha will play Bach's Cello Suite No.1 in G and we will finish the programme with Mozart's Clarinet Quintet.
For several years now the orchestra have raised money for Children in Need by performing in the foyer of whichever theatre we are in that week. On more than one occasion we chose to perform the Mozart Clarinet Quintet so it will be great for us to perform this fabulous work in a concert rather than battling with background noise!
The Tartini is an interesting piece and one which I'm sure the audience will enjoy. The composer was actually around in the Baroque period, long before the clarinet had developed. The work is an arrangement of various violin pieces by Tartini arranged by the English twentieth century composer, Gordon Jacob for the clarinet. It works really well and it's such a treat for me to play Baroque music. There's so much beautiful music from this time which I am effectively excluded from as the clarinet didn't exist.
We have been rehearsing for the concert series at Northern Ballet in Leeds whilst on tour with Cleopatra. Barry Collarbone (Orchestra Manager) and Steve Robertson, our new company manager, have both helped us find venues. We've now seen lots of rooms in the theatres which we never knew existed!!
Time to go as we have two performances in Sheffield today and have decided to have a quintet rehearsal in between the shows. I think it will be a long day so we need to pace ourselves a bit!
The Concert Series runs through 2011
