One of our original Professional Programme students Courtney George has been awarded a scholarship to Laine Theatre Arts School just two days after her first audition. Last month she won the Young Dancer of the Year at The Dance Show in Birmingham. Well done Courtney! Your tireless enthusiasm, dedication and hard work have reaped the rewards you richly deserve.
We caught up with Courtney who told us more about her exceptional couple of months.
'I can't wait to go to full-time dance college to develop my training further because I just love to dance – it is all I have ever wanted to do. To be offered a scholarship to Laine Theatre Arts is a dream come true!
'On the day of the audition I was a bit nervous but mainly excited. When we arrived we watched a video all about the aims of the school which made me want to succeed even more as everything I saw and heard inspired me. For the audition we had to do an acting workshop, a ballet class, a jazz class, a singing solo and a dance solo. When I came out of the audition I felt really positive because I'd had a day of really enjoyable, but also really useful, classes, and also because I had performed to the best of my ability. It really was an amazing day, and then to receive a letter telling me I had an unconditional place a few days later made my week! I really can't wait to start there in September. I am excited for the challenge over the next three years, but most of all I am excited to live my dream!
'It feels amazing to be crowned Young Dancer of the Year 2011. It is such a fantastic opportunity for me and is going to help so much with my career. The competition was held at the Clothes Show Live which was really amazing. Twenty selected young dancers had to learn a routine choreographed by David Wood, then the judges watched us perform it in small groups and chose 10 of us to go through to the next round. We had to perform it again on stage a few more times in front of an audience and then five went through to the final, where we also had to dance a two minute solo choreographed by ourselves. After this they gave us feedback on our performances and then announced the winner. It was such a shock to have won the competition as there were so many talented dancers on the stage. I was taken to the VIP lounge (with some Hollyoaks cast members!) and then given VIP seats to watch the fashion show which was out of this world! The dancers were absolutely brilliant and gave me something to aspire to. I am thrilled to be given the title of Young Dancer of the Year and it is a day I will never forget.'
