We've done it! We have now well and truly officially opened our new home. Following 3 evenings of celebrations last week we held our Open Day on Saturday and we were truly overwhelmed by the response we received. More than 2250 people took the opportunity to look around our new home, watch a performance or class demonstration, try out a dance class, view our costume and photography exhibition and rub shoulders with our fabulous dancers. The feedback we've had has been excellent, thank you to everyone who came. For those of you who asked, we will be having another Open Day at some point in the future - we need to recover from this one first though!
The day started earlier than planned as so many people arrived before 11.30am. Visitors could watch Northern Ballet dancers taking class at the start of the day and watch them in rehearsal at the end of the day. There were 4 varied performances in our Studio Theatre featuring people of mixed ability who had been working with our Learning team; Phoenix Youth Academy; Northern Ballet Academy and Northern Ballet dancers. All performances were completely sold out and it was wonderful to see our 230-seat theatre full to bursting and a real treat for the audience to see our dancers so close up. Vistors also got to observe Northern Ballet Academy and Phoenix Youth Academy dancers put through their paces in a range of class demonstrations. These proved more popular than we imagined and people were at least 4-deep watching from the side. Many people said how much they enjoyed visiting our wardrobe department who were busy preparing costumes for Cleopatra. The department saw a stream of visitors throughout the day and were more than happy to talk about their work. Just outside wardrobe were a number of costumes on display and visitors enjoyed getting up close to them to see their intricate designs and appreciate the artistry that goes into handmaking each one. Dancers Matthew Broadbent and Josh Barwick took part in make-up demonstrations which turned them into Grandpa from The Nutcracker. We also had a photography exhibition of images from our past and present. This exhibition will remain in the building and will shortly move to the foyer where you can come in and view it when we're open.
