Andrew Tomlinson is in Level 6 of the Professional Programme. Last summer he received a full scholarship to train with National Ballet School in Canada for 4 weeks. Andrew told us more about his experience.
One of our original Professional Programme students Courtney George has been awarded a scholarship to Laine Theatre Arts School just two days after her first audition. Last month she won the Young Dancer of the Year at The Dance Show in Birmingham. Well done Courtney! Your tireless enthusiasm, dedication and hard work have reaped the rewards you richly deserve.
My name is Leanne Kirkham and I’m the new Education Officer at Northern Ballet, I’m here for six months and will keep you regularly updated on my time and experiences here. I’m very excited about working with such a well established professional company and am looking forward to meeting lots of new people in Leeds through my outreach work. My job is mainly to promote Northern Ballet as an accessible, friendly place where you can watch the amazing company in their performances and experience dance yourself, even if you’ve never danced before!
Before Christmas we held a party for our Mini Movers and Moving Minis (classes for children aged 18months - 4years old).
We had loads of fun singing Christmas songs and playing in the bubble machine and then finished the morning off with mince pies and orange juice. Lani and Sharon (both aged 3) had a great time filming these short clips to tell you how they got on!
We have seen a huge improvement in our Minis this term - lots more confidence and rhythm! We can’t wait to see everyone again for the start of the spring term in January.
Former CAT student Matthew Topliss (Northern Ballet Academy 2005 - 09) is now in his third year with the Royal Conservatoire Scotland. He is currently working with Scottish Ballet as part of the cast for Ashley Page's production of Sleeping Beauty, performing in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Newcastle. Viki Westall, Northern Ballet Academy Deputy Associate Director, caught up with him in a short break between rehearsals.
Our Dancing for the Over 55s class has been running for almost a year now and is becoming increasingly popular as word spreads of the fun and fitness people get from it. Participants not only improve their dance skills but also form friendships and social groups, so much so that it’s difficult to stop them all chatting at the start of each class!
We're celebrating after receiving another award for our new home with Phoenix Dance Theatre on Friday night. Our architects Jacobs were joint winners of the SCALA (Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities) Civic Building of the Year Award 2011 with Stanton Williams for Wiltshire Council Offices.
Last Thursday the dark early evening rain and wind intensified the atmosphere of suspense and expectation around the Leeds Town Hall Crypt, as the first set of people came along to find out more about OverWorlds & UnderWorlds, the first major public-arts project by Leeds Canvas, planned for next year.
