We'd like to wish Dame Gillian Lynne a very happy birthday from all of us at Northern Ballet as she turns 90 on Saturday 20 February.
Dame Gillian first worked with Northern Ballet in 1987 creating A Simple Man based on the life and works of LS Lowry. The piece went on to win a BAFTA and introduced the Company to Christopher Gable CBE who went on to become our Artistic Director.
In 1989 she choreographed Lipizzaner and in 2009 she returned to Northern Ballet to choreograph On Such A Night for our 40th anniversary celebrations.
Northern Ballet are a Company that never stands still. Directly after our incredibly popular Christmas season of The Nutcracker, and before the busy national spring 2016 tour, we are travelling to China to perform The Great Gatsby in Shanghai and Beijing.
Matthew Bourne's New Adventures and Re:Bourne are staging an evening of dance at Sadler's Well to celebrate the life of Jonathan Ollivier who was tragically taken from us earlier this year.
The programme features a number of Companies with whom Jonathan trained or performed including Northern Ballet, Matthew Bourne, The Rambert School and The McOnie Company. Kevin and Karen Clifton from Strictly Come Dancing will perform in memory of their, and our, friend.
Last Wednesday 9 September, Northern Ballet were privileged to enjoy a visit from our royal patron HRH the Earl of Wessex KG GCVO.
His Royal Highness enjoyed a dinner with Northern Ballet Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, alongside 1984 choreographer Jonathan Watkins and senior personnel and dancers from across the Company. The group shared a Loyal Toast with His Royal Highness to mark Her Majesty the Queen becoming the longest serving British Monarch.
Christopher Gable CBE was born 13 March 1940 and in his career danced with the Sadler's Wells Opera Ballet, Covent Garden Opera Ballet, was a Principal Dancer at The Royal Ballet where he created many roles and in 1982 he founded the Central School of Ballet.
On Friday 12 September after that day's performance of Dracula our Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, will be answering your questions about the production, the costumes, choreography, characters and more.
We invite you, whether you are attending that performance or not, to submit your questions for David.
