Christopher Gable took over as Artistic Director or Northern Ballet Theatre in 1987 and in 1988 the Company staged a lavish production of The Amazing Adventures of Don Quixote, choreographed by Michael Pink. This week's trip to the archive reveals an image from 1986 of Ancient Airs and Dances choreographed by Michael Corder with music by Ottorino Respighi and designs from Charles Maude. Ancient Airs and Dances received its World Premiére at Bradford Alhambra Theatre on June 16 1986 and this photo was taken by the celebrated Leslie E. Spatt.

In 1981 Robert de Warren created a new version of A Midsummer Night's Dream with production designs by first-time ballet designer Clive Lavagna. His costumes were very modern for the time, with body-suits to allow the audience to admire the dancer's movements, poise and athleticism. The music used was, of course, Mendelssohn's famous score with additional pieces from his Songs Without Words all arranged by Leonard Salzedo. In 1983 we produced a new version of Alice in Wonderland with choreographer Rosemary Helliwell, music by Joseph Horovitz and designer Elisabeth Dalton. This photo, from 1984, features dancer Lynn Jezzard in the title role.

Dracula is back at West Yorkshire Playhouse this and next week - we first performed David Nixon's take on the immortal Count back in 2005 with David Paul Kierce as one of the leads. Kierce first got his teeth in to the role when David Nixon originally created the ballet for BalletMet, Ohio. Here's some photos from those 2005 performances...
In 1985 Robert de Warren (choreographer and Artistic Director) created a new ballet based on Shakespeare's Othello. In this pic the composer, Loris Tjeknavoran discusses the music with de Warren and dancers Marcello Angelini (Othello) and Daniela Buson (Desdemona). Othello had its Premiére at Nothampton on September 4 1985.
In 1992 Dennis Wayne choreographed a new Swan Lake using Tchaikovsky's score. The production was incredibly popular – it sold out much of it's thirty-plus city run, including two weeks in London. This week's photo from the archive features dancers Jayne Regan and William Walker as Odette and Prince Siegfried, taken by Anthony Crickmay.
This week we've found an image from 1988 by Ian Woollams of The Amazing Adventures of Don Quixote. It features two of Northern Ballet's most loved performers - Jeremy Kerridge and Christopher Gable.
