Academy FAQs

Can students continue training with their own dance teachers if they become a Northern Ballet student?
Summer school

Of course. All associate students must attend a regular dance teacher in order to be on the Northern Ballet Associate programme, which is an enhancement to their studies with their home teacher.

We encourage CAT students to continue their classes with their dance teacher as long as they can cope with the hours and they fit in around their schedule at Northern Ballet- especially classes in dance forms other than classical ballet – as this will enhance their studies. As the students progress on the programme their hours with the Academy will increase and so some students might have to cut down their hours elsewhere. We encourage students to stay in touch with their home dance school as much as possible, even if they have had to reduce their hours there. The Academy will continue to keep the students’ home schools updated on the student’s progress and invite them in to watch class. We like to work with dance teachers as closely as possible to keep them updated with the training the students are doing and always welcome teachers to come in a speak to us about the training.

Students on our Open Programme are welcome to continue their training with their own dance teacher on top of their training with Northern Ballet.

How will the students benefit?

One of the main benefits of training at the Northern Ballet Academy is having the connection with the professional Company. It allows students to interact with the Company dancers, watch Company training and rehearsals and so gives them a greater understanding of what it is like to be a professional dancer.

The students are trained by a faculty of international teachers who have all had professional dance experience. Northern Ballet’s training programmes allow students to access high quality professional dance training whilst still being able to live at home and maintain a regular home life. For many families, moving away from home at the age of 11 is not an option. For these students the CAT scheme means that they can train intensively and can still go home to their families at the end of the evening. We find that this leads to very well rounded individuals and also allows students to stay on top of their academic studies.

Will it enhance their classes with their home dance teacher?
Academy dancers

Yes. The Associate Division is designed to do exactly that and prepare students for auditions for vocational school.

Northern Ballet does not follow a regular syllabus such as RAD, IDTA or BBO. The syllabus has been designed by Yoko Ichino, Ballet Mistress and Curriculum Manager. Yoko places great importance on proper alignment and strengthening so these are aspects which will help students in their other syllabus work. Each class is different so students learn to pick up exercises very quickly. Free classes are something that students don’t always have time to do at their home schools if they are working on grade work.

Do you offer open classes to the public?

Yes, the Northern Ballet Academy runs open classes for all ages – from walking to over-55s.
