Learn more about Joseph

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Skegness, a small town on the east coast of Lincolnshire, which really was a great place to grow up.

Where did you do your dance training?

I began my dance training at The Janice Sutton Theatre School in Skegness where I studied all forms of dance, whilst at the same time I attended all junior, mid and senior associate classes of the Royal Ballet School. At 16 I then joined Elmhurst School For Dance where I trained full time for three years.

When did you join Northern Ballet?

I joined Northern Ballet in July 2012 and this is my first season with the company.

What made you want to be a dancer?

When I was a child I wanted to be a gymnast, but later I discovered ballet and from then on the feeling after a performance on stage was what inspired me to carry on.

What would be your dream role to dance and why?

Aminta in Sir Fredrick Ashton's Sylvia, as I love the music, choreography and the story in this ballet.

If you could adapt one work into a ballet what would it be?

Pirates of the Caribbean as it has the love story and the action.

Who are your artistic influences or heroes?

My artistic influences are Marianela Nunez and Roberto Bolle as I think their artistic and technical qualities are superb. Also Desmond Kelly really inspired me to work hard and made me believe I could do it.

Describe your perfect Sunday morning.

Making pancakes with Nutella with my friends from school and taking my dog for a walk on the beach.

What was the first album you bought and what was the last album you bought?

First album, The Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business. Last album, You Me At Six - Hold me down.

What would be your luxury item on a desert island?

Man's best friend, my dog!!

What are your favourite places in Yorkshire?

York is my favourite city as it is a nice and has good shops and interesting history.
