Matthew Koon, who trained with Northern Ballet Academy and English National Ballet School, joins us as a First Year Corps. Matthew was a finalist on Got to Dance on SKY1.
Where were you born and raised?
Where did you do your dance training?
I trained at English National Ballet School and before that Centre Pointe Dance School.
When did you join northern ballet?
What made you want to be a dancer?
When I was a kid, I was always involved in many different things. First was dancing, then gymnastics, swimming, piano, violin, singing, drama, kung-fu and also after school maths club! I enjoyed doing all of these activities, but in the end with the heavy training and long hours, it was narrowed down to two; dancing and gymnastics.
When I was around 10 years old, we realised that with the amount of pressure coming from both things and also trying to keep up with my studies at school, I had to make a decision to go for one or the other in order to be effective in anything. Naturally, I chose dancing. It was the music and the discipline that is needed in order to have freedom of expression that I loved.
Describe your perfect Sunday morning..
Wake up naturally (no alarm!) in time for brunch in a nearby café with a person that I care about.
What would be your luxury item on a desert island?
A camera. I enjoy looking for opportunities to take interesting photographs.
Where are your favourite places in Yorkshire?
I'm not really familiar with Yorkshire yet as I have only been here as a child, but I plan to do some exploring!
