Wheelchair Dance Project 2011

In March and May, the Learning team held taster sessions for the Wheelchair Dance project, offering young people in Leeds who are wheelchair users, the chance to try some dance.

Dance artists Caroline Burn and Zoe Parker led the sessions which introduced participants to movement in their chairs, and explored the use of props as a stimulus for movement. Using giant elastic bands, the group worked together using the resistance to engage core muscles, pulling each other and having lots of fun finding interesting shapes and ways in and out of the tangles made. They also used bright coloured ribbons and large spots to weave in and out of around the studio.

The participants were delighted to be involved in the sessions and to be creating movement in the dance studio, and they provided a great start to the rest of the project. The next Wheelchair Dance sessions will be held at the start of July and are open to any young people (aged 9 - 26) in Leeds who are a wheelchair user, and will work towards creating a short performance for the Wharfedale Festival in Ilkley.

Northern Ballet, ArtForms and YAMSEN are running wheelchair dance workshops at Northern Ballet in July to give you the chance to try some dance, led by Northern Ballet dance artists.

You will then have the chance to perform a short dance piece at the Wharfedale Festival at the Kings Hall in Ilkley.
