Richard Digance - 40 years in the business

Published on

Richard Digance is performaing at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre at Northern Ballet on Saturday 12 November; he may only have been a professional comic for 40 years – but it feels a lot longer than that.

When the guitar-wielding funnyman/folk singer/poet/stand-up/jack of all trades takes to stage at Leeds’s newest venue, The Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre at Northern Ballet's home on Quarry Hill next week, you should find a man totally at peace with his legacy and place in the showbiz firmament.

After decades of touring the world, hosting his own TV specials, releasing albums, supporting the likes of Steve Martin and Robin Williams in America, playing a guitar duet with Brian May on the box and playing alongside The Beach Boys at Knebworth, you can understand it when the amiable comedian asserts he has "nothing left to prove".

I'm happy where I am now, I've done what I wanted to do and now I just want to enjoy myself.

This year is my 40th anniversary in the business, which is quite a milestone – but sometimes it feels longer.

Sometimes I feel like I started out in 1873 and sometimes I wish it was only my 20th anniversary so I could do it all over again.

So I'll be doing a bit of that, I'll be doing some folk club and then I'll be doing some of the bigger theatres later in the year – sort of bringing together everything my career has encapsulated.

For his Leeds appearance, Richard will be splitting the show into two halves – the first of all new material; the second of some old favourite songs and routines.

He says,

I don't want to be one of those old blokes going around saying, oh, look I used to be on the telly, here's some stuff I did in the 1980s.

The stuff that interests me at the moment is about how we're all skint and struggling, and I mean everyone.

Hopefully, I've got a few songs that will put some smiles on a few faces.
