Setting the stage

It is always a challenge working in venues overseas with language barriers and unfamiliar equipment. Though staff here are very willing tasks take longer than usual and the crew continued well into the night, focusing the lights. The stage of the Cultural Centre is very large and Christmas Carol, designed for all our touring venues in the UK, will look a little small but the energy from the dancers will make it look huge! The Technical Rehearsal was a little challenging and as always there was...

Setting up for the performance

The dancers arrived last night after a good flight. Some ventured out while some had an early night after their long journey. Today they have a free day to explore the sites and relax by the pool or in the Spa. The fit up started at the Thailand Cultural Centre this morning and all is going to schedule. The Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra have further rehearsals with Nigel Gaynor today.

A Christmas Carol music score

The Company is giving two performances of A Christmas Carol at the Bangkok International Festival of Music and Dance on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September. This is a very prestigious festival and we are delighted to be back having performed Peter Pan here in 2005. I left the UK on Tuesday evening (as did the Technical and Music Staff) and within 2 hours of landing in Bangkok on Wednesday I was watching an excellent performance of Swan Lake by Zurich Ballet at the Thailand Cultural Centre...

Looking forward

Already into September and we have completed four weeks of the most jam packed rehearsal period ever! The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Dangerous Liaisons, A Christmas Carol and a pinch of Cleopatra. It's all go, go, go and pack, pack, pack! For the dancers the move to the new building doesn't seem too daunting. We're used to living a somewhat nomadic lifestyle and packing light is a forte of ours, as we are, after all, a touring company. But even my organisational skills are being...

Cleopatra

What do Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Catrall, Angelina Jolie, Claude Michel Schonberg and David Nixon OBE have in common? Just the most powerful woman in history: Cleopatra. Elizabeth Taylor famously portrayed her in the 1962 film Cleopatra; Kim Catrall of Sex & the City fame will take on the role atthe Liverpool Playhouse in Anthony and Cleopatra in October; rumours abound that Angelina Jolie will star in a new historical biography, based on book by Stacy Schiff; and now composer Claude Michel...

A Dancer in Macau, part 2

Vicky, Christie & Micky

Friday in Macau We had class today at 12.30 – 13.45, then straight into the tech at 14.00- 17.00 with the Orchestra here in Macau. Time for a quick swim after early breakfast, a dip in the pool is a really great way to start a day! The tech went really well and the Orchestra sounded great, I keep my ear’s open as it’s only human nature to go on auto pilot after hearing the recording for a week or so. A live orchestra really does give a show that extra lift and edge of excitement. The show was a...

A Dancer in Macau

Monday: on to Macau At 11.45 we met at the foyer of the YMCA Hong Kong for a 12.00 on-the-dot leave to the ferry terminal. We put our cases into what looked like a Chinese bin lorry and then onto an air conditioned coach. Not too far to drive and everyone is double checking they have everything they need and are all organised. We were all hoping for a quick, smooth journey over to Macua, as the sooner we got there, the sooner we could start the ‘day off’. A bizarre check-in period: we were...

A Dancer in Hong Kong

So off to Hong Kong we go! We’ve never finished a touring season abroad, when we have done overseas tours before they have been at the beginning of a season. So after a touring stretch from February till now with a total of six ballets within that time, we were all feeling the end of season blues but the excitement of a trip abroad filled us with some much needed energy. I chose to do a mad dash drive down to my sister’s house on Monday night after a final run through at West Park in...
