If you’ve ever wondered what life is really like as a dancer and how a new ballet comes together, you can find out this weekend. Sky Arts 2 is providing the chance to peak behind the scenes in its documentary of Northern Ballet which will be broadcast this Sunday 15 January at 5pm.
‘Sky Arts at Northern Ballet’ charts the build up to the World Première of Northern Ballet’s Beauty & the Beast, which was performed in Leeds to over 19,000 people during December 2011.
The programme features footage of rehearsals and performances, interviews with lead dancers, Martha Leebolt (Beauty) and Ashley Dixon (Beast), and with Northern Ballet Artistic Director and Beauty & the Beast choreographer and costume designer, David Nixon OBE.
The programme also looks at the creation and development of the sets and costumes and preparations at Leeds Grand Theatre ahead of the opening performance and explores the tremendous hard work and commitment of the Company’s 37 dancers.
Beauty & the Beast became an instant success for the Company during its season in Leeds and is Northern Ballet’s most successful new ballet ever. It was the second entirely new production to be created by the Company in 2011, following hot on the heels of David Nixon’s Cleopatra.
Beauty & the Beasttakes to the road in March and April with performances in Edinburgh, Sheffield, Hull, Milton Keynes and Cardiff and returns in the autumn with performances in Norwich, Bradford, Woking, Canterbury, Aylesbury and Bath.
