Hello and welcome to Northern Ballet’s audio brochure.
Northern Ballet is the UK’s leading narrative dance company, touring extensively throughout the UK and internationally. Northern Ballet is unique in bringing together stunning classical dance, vivid, exciting theatre and live music to create productions based on well-known stories.
Northern Ballet has paved the way in creating accessible opportunities for visually impaired audiences to engage with dance. The Company provides an ideal introduction for first time ballet visitors and the quality, originality and theatricality keeps audiences coming back for more.
We have devised our own unique program of activities that support the audio description and this recording provides an insight into an audio described day with Northern Ballet.
We encourage you to arrive at the theatre at 10.30am to take part in an insight workshop which introduces the shapes and quality of the movement from the production with the aid of Company dancers. You don’t need to dance to attend the insight workshop. You can enjoy it by listening to descriptions of movements from the ballet and feeling the dancers as they demonstrate some moves. Or if you want to know how the movements feel, you can have a go and partner up with one of our dancers and let them guide you through steps from the ballet. Following the insight workshop you can attend a touch tour to hear a description of the scenery and to feel the props and costumes from the production.
Don’t worry if you can’t be at the theatre for the insight workshop and touch tour as our Audio Describer will give a detailed description of the set, costumes, scenario and characters 15 minutes before the performance in the pre-show notes.
The performance will then be brought to life in your minds eye with a detailed description of the movement, action and drama that takes place to the music played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
The Great Gatsby
Discover the heady, indulgent days of New York’s Long Island during the glamorous 1920s as Northern Ballet brings F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby to the stage.
Nick Carraway comes to know his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby – a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties and beautiful women. As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip, Carraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lies beneath.
The seductive style of the era is recreated through stunning sets and costumes. Music by Academy Award nominated and BAFTA winning composer Sir Richard Rodney Bennett CBE will be played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
With an unparalleled reputation for telling stories through dance, Northern Ballet is the perfect company to translate this popular American novel into ballet. As The Great Gatsby steps into the spotlight, don’t miss your opportunity to see what promises to be one of the most stylish adaptations of this classic work.
The Great Gatsby will be performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London from Tuesday 24th until Saturday 28th March. The audio described performance is on Saturday 28th March.
The insight workshop is from 10.30am – 12pm and the touch tour is from 12.15pm until 12.45pm. These are free to visually impaired patrons and their companion. The audio described performance starts at 2.30pm.
