Elves & the Shoemaker awarded grant to fund new score
Northern Ballet has been awarded a £5,000 grant by PRS for Music Foundation to fund a new score for the Company’s next ballet for children, Elves & the Shoemaker. The Company was also selected as the ninth winner of the David Bedford Music Education Award which is given to exceptional music education projects involving composers and new music.
Leeds-based Northern Ballet, the UK’s widest touring ballet company, has been pioneering the creation of ballets specifically for young children beginning with Ugly Duckling which premièred in 2012, followed by Three Little Pigs which was first performed in 2013. Both productions were adapted for television by CBeebies for which Ugly Duckling won a Children’s BAFTA Award.
The Company announced its third children’s ballet, Elves & the Shoemaker, in March 2014. The ballet will be choreographed by Daniel de Andrade, Ballet Master at Northern Ballet, and will première at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre on 27 October 2014 with a national tour taking place the following year. The grant from PRS for Music Foundation will be used to commission an original score for the ballet by Philip Feeney who has previously written scores for Northern Ballet’s full-length ballets including Cinderella, Hamlet, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Hunchback of Notre Dameand Dracula.
Northern Ballet’s Chief Executive, Mark Skipper, said: “We are delighted and honoured to be the ninth winner of the David Bedford Music Education Award. The choice of music for ballet is crucial and is particularly important when engaging young children. It must inspire the choreography, build atmosphere and help to tell the story. The opportunity to further enhance the experience of our children’s ballets by commissioning a new score for Elves & the Shoemakerwill significantly help us achieve our aim of engaging young children and their families in high quality, inspirational experiences which brings enrichment and diversity to our audiences.”
Elves & the Shoemakerwill be performed at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds from 27 Oct – 1 Nov 2014. Tickets are on sale now and can be booked online at theatreleeds.com or by calling the box office on 0113 220 8008.
