Academy Students Experience Contemporary Dance
Recently the Northern Ballet Academy students had the chance to take a trip to the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre to watch Phoenix Dance Theatre’s latest performance of Declarations; a combination of four short works.
The show began with the ‘The Audacious One.’ A confetti covered piece as confetti paper was littering the stage! This imaginative piece used an unusual apprentice style set which captured the audience’s attention, and it must be said the dancers did a very good job of picking the confetti up!
To follow this fantastic opening came ‘Locked in Vertical’ it had much to live up to, but it did not disappoint! This piece was simple about the dance, striped of elaborate costumes and set, the audience was consumed with the amazing strength and skill of the company dancers. A perfect way to keep the audience wanting more just before the interval!
The second half opened with ‘Haunted Passages.’ The eerie and ghostly feel was represented through a fantastic set choice and as ever fantastic dancing. This contrasted well with the unusual final piece, ‘Maybe yes maybe, maybe no maybe.’
A speech led piece using a mix of soundtrack voices including the dancers own along with a live speech from the dancers using a microphone hanging from the ceiling on stage. This added a new and interesting dimension to the performance as a whole. Who said dancers didn’t need to use their voices!
The Academy really enjoyed the performance giving the students something to remember and aspire to, and the fun hasn’t stopped there! We have also had the fantastic opportunity of taking contemporary classes with Phoenix dancer Azzura Ardovini over the last few weeks. Azzura’s classes have taught us more about contemporary dance and the different styles that there are. It is amazing how much energy she has- she has been a really fun teacher and has got us to just throw ourselves into our dancing and dance big! It’s great to get to know Phoenix Dance Theatre a little more.
We can’t wait for the next performance!
