Northern Ballet's New Season

Press release date
Thu 5 Aug 2010

Northern Ballet Theatre (NBT) is pleased to announce its autumn/winter tour programme for 2010 which opens in the Company's home city of Leeds with David Nixon's Dangerous Liaisons.

Nixon's dance adaptation of Laclos' classic novel tells a story of sexual power, depravity, cruelty and deceit in 18th century France. Letters fly between the mansions of France as two bored aristocrats plot a game of heartbreak and ruin. As their plans unfold innocence is preyed upon, relationships shattered and love lost. Vivaldi's spine-tingling Four Seasons, played live by the Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra, wraps itself around seductive dance in a sexually-charged production.

David Nixon explains, "The Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont are both predators, of the most decadent type, preying on less artful victims. They are the products of extreme luxury and total liberty, when idle minds had time to plot the ruination of others within their society," says Nixon.

On tour to Bradford, Woking and the new Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury, is Swan Lake. Originally created in 2004, David Nixon's production is set in New England in the early twentieth century, where a wealthy college boy lives with his parents on a luxurious lakeside estate. Anthony is haunted by the shadows of the past and the tragic death of this brother. Confused by his feelings towards his two best friends he looks to the water for answers - in whatever form they take.

This iconic tale of love and obsession is performed to Tchaikovsky's passionate and popular score, played live by the Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra.

For the festive season NBT brings to life everyone's favourite Christmas story with the revival of The Nutcracker at five theatres across the UK: Nottingham, Norwich, Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds.

The Nutcracker is a seasonal favourite told in a traditional way. One of the world's favourite ballets, it has delighted audiences, young and old, for over 100 years. The perfect introduction to classical ballet, The Nutcracker has something for everyone, from the land of the snow, to the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. David Nixon has set his version in the Regency period captured by Charles Cusick Smith's beautiful set designs, David Nixon's vivid costumes, and Mark Jonathan's lighting. Tchaikovsky's score is arranged by John Longstaff and performed live by the NBT Orchestra.
