60 seconds with Mark Skipper DL

Last month marked 30 years since our Chief Executive Mark Skipper DL joined the Company as Deputy Stage Manager. Here he gave us a quick-fire minute to reflect on his time at Northern Ballet.

What has been your favourite Northern Ballet production and why?

During my time at Northern Ballet I have been involved with more than 70 productions. If you pushed me to choose I would say The Great Gatsby. Great music, great choreography and great story.

What has been your proudest achievement with Northern Ballet?

Creating our building on Quarry Hill, Leeds in 2011. It was transformational for the Company and will be a lasting legacy.

And your biggest regret?

I don’t have any regrets. I believe that anything that happens, good or bad, contributes to the overall success of the Company.

If you hadn’t joined Northern Ballet 30 years ago where do you think you would be now?

I hope I wouldn’t still be working at Barclays Bank. Hopefully I would be working for another great arts organisation in a warmer part of the world!

Which is your favourite theatre?

The most amazing theatre I have worked in is at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing but closer to home Sadler’s Wells is a great venue for audiences and performers and, of course, our home theatre, Leeds Grand.

Favourite restaurant?

Fischer’s in Baslow, Derbyshire

Other than Northern Ballet, who are your top tip to watch in 2018?

I was hugely impressed by the recent production of Tommy by Ramps on the Moon (an inclusive theatre company). I am looking forward to seeing what they do next.

One sentence of advice for any budding business leaders.

Always see the positive in any situation as ultimately you will be stronger for the experience.

What will be your New Year’s resolution?

To make more time to get away from my desk and watch more rehearsals in the studio.
