Alexander Yap

Alexander is from London and trained at The Royal Ballet School from the age of eight. He joined Northern Ballet in 2015.

In June 2018 Alexander left Northern Ballte to join Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Hampstead, London and grew up in Hampstead Garden suburbs.

At what age did you start dancing?

I was six years old when I took my first ballet class at The Finchley Ballet School.

Where did you train?

At The Royal Ballet Lower and Upper Schools.

Which Northern Ballet roles would you most like to dance?

Romeo in Romeo and Juliet.

Career/training highlights

Performing as the main mandolinist in Romeo and Juliet and dancing in Christopher Wheeldon's Rush.

What do you like most about being a dancer?

Being able to express music through my body as if it were an instrument.

If you could adapt one work into a ballet what would it be?

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.

What is your favourite book?

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

What is your favourite post-show meal?

I love Japanese food but if I'm cooking then Chinese is better as it's quick, easy and tasty.

How do you like to relax?

Playing or listening to music.

If you weren’t a dancer what would you be?

A pianist or an architect.
