Robert Winslade Anderson
Robert was born in Jamaica and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Whilst a student his prizes and awards included the Tom Hammond Opera Prize, the Vice Principal’s Award for Excellence, the Kiwanis International Music Festival Silver Tray, the ABRSM International Scholarship, the Oratorio Prize and the Major Van Someren-Godfery Prize for English Song.
Robert joined Welsh National Opera in 2006 where his roles included 1st Streltsy in Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina, Captain Petrovich Eugene Onegin and Bobby Sweetness and Badness for WNO Max. Roles elsewhere include King Philip and Monk Don Carlos, Don Fernando Fidelio and 2nd Guard From the House of the Dead for Opera North, 2nd Knight and understudy Titurel in Parsifal for English National Opera, Masetto Don Giovanni for Opera Holland Park, Time and Antinous in Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses and Lodovico Otello for Birmingham Opera Company, Il Commendatore for Opera East’s production of Don Giovanni and Mordec in the newly commissioned community opera, The Knight Crew for Glyndebourne Opera. Whilst at college his roles included Sarastro The Magic Flute conducted by Sir Colin Davis, Buonafede Haydn’s Il Mondo Della Luna and Lunado in Wolf-Ferrarri’s The School for Fathers.
Concert highlights include Porgy in Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess with the Sinfonieorchester Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, Verdi’s Requiem with Brian Kay at the Royal Albert Hall, London, Mozart’s Requiem with Sir Roger Norrington, Haydn’s Nelson’s Mass at Snape Maltings and soloist in the Mostly Mozart Concert Series at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. Robert made his debut in 2006 at the Edinburgh International Festival in Schumann’s Manfred. A keen recitalist, Robert has worked with accompanist Llyr Williams and has appeared in recital at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan with Japanese accompanist Kiki Kashiwagi.
Robert left WNO in January 2009 to embark on a freelance career. Recent engagements include Ramfis in Aida for Raymond Gubbay Ltd and Basilio in Marcos Portugal’s The Marriage of Figaro for Bampton Classical Opera. Future plans include Der Tod in Der Kaiser von Atlantis for English Touring Opera.
