Ability, Northern Ballet’s course for adults with learning disabilities, has had a great start to the new academic year. We have welcomed three new members to the group, and in September we worked with choreographer Tanya Richam-Odoi to create and perform a fantastic piece as part of Light Night Leeds.

Ugly Duckling takeover at Northern Ballet!

It’s a very busy week here at Northern Ballet headquarters as the Company are performing Ugly Duckling, a ballet for children, at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from Monday until Saturday. As well as fitting 17 performances into just one week, our family friendly foyer will be open for business, with lots of craft activities, treasure trails and even a chance to try your luck with hook-a-duck!

Light Night Leeds 2017 Blog

On Thursday 5 and Friday 6 October, Quarry Hill was alive with performance, workshops and projection as Light Night Leeds illuminated the city. As part of the commission by Leeds Dance Partnership and Leeds College of Music, our Ability group and Centre for Advanced Training students performed in unusual spaces around our building.

Artsmark Celebration Week

This week is the first ever Artsmark Celebration Week, which shines a light on the importance of cultural education and fantastic schools putting arts and culture at the heart of young people’s education.

Artsmark is the creative quality standard for schools and education settings, and Northern Ballet’s Learning team have been busy working with schools throughout Hull to support their Artsmark journey, enabling them to deliver a more creative curriculum.

Find out about the Summer Course 2018

This August, 33 young people joined us for four days of fun on our Summer Course. This annual course is an opportunity for young people aged 7-11 to develop their ballet technique and creativity. Our dance artists work alongside a collaborative artist to introduce participants to something different and to develop new skills.

My name is Ebony and I am the Dance Education Apprentice at Northern Ballet. I have been in my role for nearly a year now, and as the apprentice I have been observing, supporting and co-delivering workshops with the Dance Education Officers, which will help guide me towards my goal of becoming a dance teacher.

Can Older People Dance?

Yes they can!

As a Dance Education Officer, I spend a lot of my time teaching dance workshops in schools, however this term I’ve been doing something a little different. Together with artists from Opera North, I’ve been going into Manor House Care Home in New Farnley every Friday afternoon to do some seated ballet and singing.
