Welcome to Diary of a Ballet Geek

Published on Wednesday 19 March, 2014

Hello. My name is Lauren and I am a ballet-aholic.

To be honest, the whole thing snuck up on me. I never expected that in December 2009, when I innocently decided to take my Mum and Sister to see Northern Ballet's Peter Pan as an alternative to panto, it would light a spark within me that now even all the water in the English Channel would struggle to extinguish.

Before that I'd been one of the pink, floaty-skirt wearing 5-year olds at ballet class every Saturday and I'd been to one or two ballets in London during my childhood but it was never anything serious. Saturdays during my teenage years were spent donning a Chelsea FC shirt and cheering on the mighty blues at Stamford Bridge. I never gave ballet a second thought.

It was only once I'd moved 'up north' that the seed started to grow. That first trip to see Peter Pan was quickly followed by a performance of English National Ballet's Romeo & Juliet and since then, not only have I been to see an average of 10 different productions a year, I also now work for one of the UK's leading ballet companies.

It's hard to put my finger on why I love ballet so much. Every company, every production and every cast is different from the next. The dances can be romantic and emotional, exciting and sexy, even hilarious, all whilst telling stories that you know and love. Add wonderful live music, beautiful sets and exquisite costumes to the mix and you've got the complete package for a highly enjoyable, affordable evening's (or afternoon's) entertainment.

There are so many misconceptions about ballet: it's expensive, it's difficult to understand, it's for girls, it's all about tutus, it's old-fashioned, it's elitist...I could go on, but quite frankly none of these things are true.

In my future blogs I'll be putting these misconceptions to bed plus giving you the lowdown on all things Northern Ballet with an insider's view of our productions. So stick with me and you'll all be ballet geeks too in no time.
