BBC Young Dancer 2017

Published on Wednesday 18 January, 2017

This month our Artistic Director David Nixon OBE will reprise his role as Ballet Mentor in the 2017 BBC Young Dancer competition. The competition aims to showcase the very best of young British talent in four dance disciplines: Street Dance, Ballet, South Asian and Contemporary.

The BBC Young Dancer competition was last held in 2015 where David coached the male ballet semi-finalists. This year’s male ballet contestants will once again be mentored by David with the women being guided by Viviana Durante, former principal dancer of The Royal Ballet. The first round of mentoring took place in Newport on 10 January 2017 and the ballet category final will take place at the Quays Theatre in Salford on 22 January 2017, this will be screened on BBC Four on 31 March 2017. The grand final takes place at Sadler's Wells on 22 April 2017 and will be televised live on BBC Two.

Following the 2015 BBC Young Dancer competition, three of the ballet category semi-finalists, including dancer Jenny Hackwell, were offered professional contracts with Northern Ballet commencing their careers as professional dancers. Jenny is currently in her second year at Northern Ballet and has already had the opportunity to perform key roles including Clara in The Nutcracker and Young Cathy in Wuthering Heights, as well as creating the role of Goldilocks in our newest children’s ballet Goldilocks & the Three Bears.
