Win at the South Bank Awards

We are delighted to have won the dance award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards for our production of 1984. Presented at a ceremony in London yesterday, we were nominated alongside The Royal Ballet and Lost Dog. The awards will be televised on Sky Arts at 8pm on Wednesday 8 June.

Beauty & the Beast Premières in Perth

Northern Ballet Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, has been in Australia with West Australian Ballet to stage his Beauty & the Beast.

David created the ballet for Christmas 2011 at Leeds Grand Theatre before it toured to eleven cities in the UK from Canterbury to Edinburgh.

West Australian Ballet will be performing Beauty & the Beast 13 - 28 May at His Majesty's Theatre, Perth.

Shakespeare 400

On 23 April 1616 at the age of 52, William Shakespeare died leaving a legacy of some of the best-loved works of comedy, drama and history the world has ever known.

This year we’ll be performing Romeo and Juliet in Sheffield, Canterbury, Belfast, Woking, and Bradford to help celebrate this titan of literature’s long-lasting work.

Happy Birthday Dame Gillian Lynne

We'd like to wish Dame Gillian Lynne a very happy birthday from all of us at Northern Ballet as she turns 90 on Saturday 20 February.

Dame Gillian first worked with Northern Ballet in 1987 creating A Simple Man based on the life and works of LS Lowry. The piece went on to win a BAFTA and introduced the Company to Christopher Gable CBE who went on to become our Artistic Director.

In 1989 she choreographed Lipizzaner and in 2009 she returned to Northern Ballet to choreograph On Such A Night for our 40th anniversary celebrations.

The Great Gatsby visits China

Northern Ballet are a Company that never stands still. Directly after our incredibly popular Christmas season of The Nutcracker, and before the busy national spring 2016 tour, we are travelling to China to perform The Great Gatsby in Shanghai and Beijing.

Matthew Bourne's New Adventures and Re:Bourne are staging an evening of dance at Sadler's Well to celebrate the life of Jonathan Ollivier who was tragically taken from us earlier this year.

The programme features a number of Companies with whom Jonathan trained or performed including Northern Ballet, Matthew Bourne, The Rambert School and The McOnie Company. Kevin and Karen Clifton from Strictly Come Dancing will perform in memory of their, and our, friend.

A Royal Visit

Last Wednesday 9 September, Northern Ballet were privileged to enjoy a visit from our royal patron HRH the Earl of Wessex KG GCVO.

His Royal Highness enjoyed a dinner with Northern Ballet Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, alongside 1984 choreographer Jonathan Watkins and senior personnel and dancers from across the Company. The group shared a Loyal Toast with His Royal Highness to mark Her Majesty the Queen becoming the longest serving British Monarch.
