In Motion

‘If I could describe In Motion in one word, it would be ‘epic’!’ (Daisy)

In Motion (our dance classes for wheelchair users) started again a few weeks ago, beginning with our classes for those aged 8 – 19 years. This year we are delighted to have welcomed five new participants to the course, all of whom travel from across the North of England to take part. Classes help participants to develop their strength and flexibility whilst giving them the opportunity to be creative and explore movement.

Each class begins with a ballet inspired warm-up, using adapted techniques to prepare the body and develop the participants’ range of movement. Participants then explore movement through creative tasks, looking at different ways for them to express their ideas. This week, participants took inspiration from day-to-day activities (such as reading a book or baking a cake) to create their own movement sequences.

‘I’ve made lots of new friends and I like being able to move really fast in my wheelchair!’ (Isabel)

‘The classes are fun because we get to create our own movement as well as learning new skills.’ (Eve)

The group are busy creating a piece for Expressions, our accessible dance platform which gives talented disabled dancers the chance to showcase their skills to an audience on a professional stage. This year’s event will take place on 5 and 6 July.

‘I’m looking forward to taking part in Expressions… it’s exciting to see other groups perform and to share what we’ve created with family and friends.’ (Emma)

This year we’re delighted to have introduced a short course for adult wheelchair users too, and we would like to hear from anyone interested in attending. There will be a FREE taster session at Northern Ballet on Sunday 21 May from 10am – 12pm.
