Expressions 2017

Published on Thursday 24 August, 2017

Last month we were delighted to host Expressions 2017, our annual accessible dance platform which brings together inclusive dance groups from across the region and beyond.

The only event of its kind in Leeds, Expressions gives talented disabled dancers the chance to showcase their skills and perform on a professional stage. Expressions is also part of BEYOND, a festival celebrating the work of artists with learning disabilities in Leeds. Thanks to funding from Leeds Inspired, this year’s event was bigger and more ambitious than ever, with over 150 performers celebrating the best of inclusive dance over two days.

This year we were fortunate to host two professional companies; TIN Arts and Ensemble BewegGrund Trier, the first international company to take part in the event:

‘This July we had the great pleasure of being part of Expressions 2017 with Ensemble BewegGrund Trier. Be it during the workshops, our performances, or in the contact with staff and other performers, all the new impressions, the creative and artistic encounters and sharings during this festival, the connections between people and the new relationships that have emerged, has been a great and unique experience.

The self-evident warmth and appreciation with which the team at Northern Ballet received us has inspired and touched us. Leeds is now firmly in our hearts and on our wish-list for future exchanges through dance. A big thank you to all the members of the team and to all the other participants of the festival for this great time!’
Tonja Rauch, Ensemble BewegGrund Trier

For the first time performers also had the opportunity to take part in workshops led by visiting professional companies to explore different ways of working, develop their dance skills and to meet other likeminded dancers who have made a career in dance.

‘The facilities and the inclusivity of the event offers young people an unforgettable experience and an opportunity that is not widely available for Special Educational Needs groups’
Karen Williams, Greenacre School

‘The event is a brilliant performance opportunity, well organised and within great facilities. Our group wish to improve their performance skills and share their artistic practice widely. Expressions helps us to do this in a supported and trusted environment’
Ceri Brierley, Raised

We're already counting down the days to next year's event, so watch this space!
