Light Night Leeds 2017 Blog

Published on Friday 13 October, 2017

On Thursday 5 and Friday 6 October, Quarry Hill was alive with performance, workshops and projection as Light Night Leeds illuminated the city. As part of the commission by Leeds Dance Partnership and Leeds College of Music, our Ability group and Centre for Advanced Training students performed in unusual spaces around our building.

Joined by Phoenix Youth Academy and Yorkshire Dance’s Saturday Street Crew, they created an electric atmosphere with Through the Glass, which led audiences through a journey of performance at Quarry Hill. Under the canopy of the trees and in the windows of the building, the stunning choreography of Tanya Richam-Odoi transformed the space, delighting audiences throughout the night. With opening fanfares, a live music stage and performances from SAA UK, Yorkshire Dance’s Bish Bash Bosh, and Balbir Singh Dance Company, Quarry Hill was a hot spot for the Light Night map.

A workshop in Leeds College of Music gave audiences the chance to create their own unique anonymous shadows with everything from yoga to body popping. Impossible Arts and West Yorkshire Playhouse also brought 3D projection mapping to the mix, capturing the faces of audiences and telling the stories of Quarry Hill – past, present and future.

As we reflect on two nights full of energy, talent and celebration, we look forward to what may be possible for 2018…
