Working with school teachers - CPD

Published on Tuesday 6 March, 2018

As part of the Learning Department’s busy programme of work, our Dance Education Officer Philippa Ranger has been delivering some Continued Professional Development (CPD) sessions for school teachers. Here she reflects on her experiences.

I have been lucky enough to work with the teachers at Green Lane Primary School in Bradford this term to deliver some bespoke CPD sessions. After meeting with the Head of Performing Arts at the school to discuss how Northern Ballet could support their school improvement plan, we decided to run two Twilight CPD sessions.

The first was for all Key Stage 1 (KS1) teachers and focused on how to encourage a passion for stories in their pupils. We explored Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling through movement, discussing how these ideas could be adapted to a classroom setting and how they could be applied to other stories.

The second Twilight CPD session was for the Key Stage 2 (KS2) teachers and focused on unlocking poetry. We explored a range of poems through dance, including Silver by Walter de la Mare. Following this, we discussed the barriers that teachers might face when delivering a cross-curricular lesson plan as well as ways to overcome these barriers.

The teachers at Green Lane Primary School had a fantastic session and they all left with a lesson plan to be used in their own practice. It was great to see the KS1 teachers getting involved with the movements, particularly as we will soon be working with the children to complete their Arts Award Discover.

The CPD opportunities we offer at Northern Ballet are growing and our next Teacher INSET Day, open to both primary and secondary teachers, will be held on 19 June 2018. This session is designed to develop teachers’ skills and confidence to deliver dance in schools, driven by the Arts Council’s Quality Principles. These principals are embedded in all of the work we do. Arts Mark Schools are entitled to receive an 80% discount on this session.
