International Wheelchair Day

Published on Friday 1 March, 2019

Today we are celebrating International Wheelchair Day, an annual day of events and activities taking place around the world for wheelchair users to celebrate the positive impact a wheelchair has on their lives.

To coincide with this, our Learning Team will be delivering workshops in the community at Seacroft Hospital and Brigshaw High School as part of in motion. At Northern Ballet we believe everybody should have the opportunity to dance, so we are delighted that our programme of dance classes for wheelchair users will be resuming this summer.

Our in motion classes help participants to develop their strength and flexibility, whilst giving them the opportunity to be creative and explore movement. Following the success of the programme last year, we are looking forward to welcoming even more young people and adults to take part in our taster sessions and classes.

Every in motion class begins with a ballet-inspired warm up, using adapted techniques to prepare the body and develop the participants’ range of movement. Participants then explore movement through creative tasks, looking at different ways to express their ideas. The participants will then perform this work at Expressions here at Northern Ballet, which celebrates the work of disabled artists from Yorkshire and beyond.

“The in motion class has improved my motivation and self-belief. I’ve participated before and really enjoyed the experience because I’ve discovered just how mobile I can be in my upper body, which does wonders for my self-confidence and self-esteem.

I also find ballet to be very beneficial to my mental health; it makes a very pleasant and healthy recreational activity”. Participant, 2018
