The Great Gatsby visits China

Published on Tuesday 19 January, 2016

Northern Ballet are a Company that never stands still. Directly after our incredibly popular Christmas season of The Nutcracker, and before the busy national spring 2016 tour, we are travelling to China to perform The Great Gatsby in Shanghai and Beijing.

Chinese audiences will be treated to the Company’s trademark classical dance, storytelling and live-music. We perform our acclaimed adaptation of one of the greatest novels of all time, choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on 30 – 31 January, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing from 3 – 5 February.

Since the late nineties Northern Ballet has toured to China, one of the first western ballet companies to do so. We last visited in January 2014 where we performed our celebrated A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Beijing, Guangzhou and Xiamen.

For the tour we’ve sent three large containers for the sets and costumes which were loaded in November 2015 and landed at Shanghai port 14 January.

Out Technical Team will fly to China on Tuesday 26 January to prepare Shanghai Grand Theatre for the performances and will be followed by the Dancers, Company and Stage Teams on 27 January.

The Great Gatsby premièred at Leeds Grand Theatre in March 2013 and has performed to sold-out houses at Sadler’s Wells, London in 2013 and 2015.
