2017 Highlights

2017 has been a phenomenal year for Northern Ballet. We performed three world premières and received several awards and nominations for both the Company and individuals.


BBC star Anita Rani joined the Board of Directors

Nominated for the CIM Marketing Excellence Award in the Innovation - Not-For-Profit/Public Sector category (1984)


Won Best Classical Choreography (Jonathan Watkins for 1984) at the 2016 National Dance Awards


Kenneth Tindall’s Casanova made its world première at Leeds Grand Theatre


Northern Ballet set a new Box Office record of £2.03M


Performed the world première of Daniel de Andrade’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas at Cast in Doncaster

Our Music Director John Pryce-Jones celebrated 25 years of service at Northern Ballet


Nominated for the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Dance (Jane Eyre)


Dancer Hironao Takahashi retired from performing after 25 years with the Company


Casanova returned for two special performances to be filmed for future broadcast

Nominated for the Knight of Illumination Award for Dance (Alastair West for Casanova)


David Nixon’s The Little Mermaid, our third and final new ballet of 2017, made its world première at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton

Nominated for the Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre at the UK Theatre Awards

Nominated for the Royal Television Society North West Award (CBeebies television adaptation of Goldilocks & the Three Bears)


Performed on the Royal Opera House main stage for the first time in a landmark performance of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Gloria

Performed the Company première of a Sir Kenneth MacMillan triple bill (Las Hermanas/Concerto/Gloria) at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford


Nominated for the Stef Stefanou Award for Outstanding Company and for Best Classical Choreography (Kenneth Tindall for Casanova) at the 2017 National Dance Awards - winners to be announced

Our Chief Executive Mark Skipper DL celebrated 30 years of service at Northern Ballet

Our Director of Communications Emma Mooney won the Arts & Culture AVIVA Women of the Future Award


Performed the Leeds première of The Little Mermaid

Won the Outstanding Achievement in a New Dance Production Award (Casanova) at the BroadwayWorld UK Awards
