Artistic Director David Nixon OBE receives prestigious award in Canada
We are delighted to announce that on Thursday 21 June at a ceremony in Canada, Artistic Director David Nixon OBE was awarded the Canada National Ballet School’s Ken McCarter Award for Distinguished National Ballet School (NBS) Alumni.
The award was designed to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of NBS alumni as well as recognise the powerful impact of an NBS education. David graduated from the school in 1976 and has gone on to pursue a highly-successful career as a dancer, choreographer and artistic director.
Mavis Staines, Artistic Director and CEO of Canada’s National Ballet School said:
“In every aspect of his long career, David has striven for, and attained, a degree of excellence that will serve as a source of inspiration for current NBS students whatever their aspirations. It seems eminently fitting that David’s illustrious career should be recognised through the bestowing of this award by NBS, the school that laid the foundations for his career and takes great pride in his accomplishments.
David has had a long and distinguished career as a dancer, choreographer and artistic director. He is currently the Artistic Director of Northern Ballet, a position he has held since 2001. Under his leadership, the Company has flourished as a result of his deep commitment to his dancers; his efforts to expand the repertoire through his own critically acclaimed choreography and the commissioning of new work by other choreographers; and an extensive touring programme that has successfully expanded the audience for dance in the United Kingdom. Through the expansion of Northern Ballet’s classical training programmes, he has also worked tirelessly to ensure the formation of the next generation of dancers. He is the recipient of many awards for both his choreography and his artistic direction, and in 2010 was awarded an OBE for his services to dance.”
The award was first established last year when it was awarded to dual-winners James Kudelka OC and Dr. Lorraine Kalia.
We extend our warmest congratulations to David on this well-deserved award.
