Amidst the uncertainty of the last few months, what is certain is that we have missed watching our amazing Company perform.
Our spring season would have come to a close last month, and with the end of the season inevitably comes the time to say goodbye to some of our incredible dancers.
After an amazing 18 years with Northern Ballet, Principal Soloist Hannah Bateman has retired from the stage, as has First Soloist Nicola Gervasi following 10 years performing with the Company. Soloist Nina Queiroz da Silva and Dancers Abigail Cockrell, Ayça Anil and Ommaira Kanga Perez have also left the Company.
Artistic Director David Nixon OBE says:
'The situation we find ourselves in due to the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented, and has prevented us from being able to say a proper goodbye to the dancers who have left us this summer. In particular, we were unable to hold the celebratory performance we had planned for Hannah Bateman, an extraordinary dancer who has committed almost two decades of her life to Northern Ballet. I would like to thank all the leavers for their work and express my sincere best wishes for their futures.
We don’t yet know when we will be able to resume rehearsals and performance and regretfully, we have been unable to offer promotions to our remaining dancers at this time due to the significant financial losses we are facing as a result of this pandemic. However, the dancers remain supportive and understanding of the situation and we look forward to welcoming them back to the studios as soon as we can safely open our doors once more.'
