Hans van Manen

Martha Leebolt and Giuliano Contadini in Concertante.
The final week of the season is upon us but there's no resting on our laurels as we prepare to open our Mixed Programme at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in our Leeds city-centre home.
Hans van Manen, from Nieuwer Amstel in the Netherlands, had his first ballet lessons at the end of the 1940s from Sonia Gaskell, who took him into her Company, Ballet Recital, in 1951. In 1957 he made his debut as a choreographer with Feestgericht which received the State Award for Choreography. From 1961 onwards van Manen has worked alternately with the two main dance companies of the Netherlands. Since 2005 he has once again held the post of resident choreographer with the Dutch National Ballet.
It's an exciting week ahead as we prepare to head down to London for our Company debut at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio Theatre.
This time next week the Company will be in residence at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio Theatre with a Mixed Programme. It's an important occasion for two reasons as it's our first ever performance at the famous Covent Garden venue and this is also the first time we've performed a triple bill outside of Leeds in recent years. If you haven't seen Northern Ballet in a Mixed Programme before then you've never seen Northern Ballet quite like this!
After the long Easter weekend we are back in the studio getting ready for the Mixed Programme at Linbury Studio Theatre at Royal Opera House. Kenneth Tindall's Luminous Juncture is set to get it's London premiere, Hans van Manen's Concertante makes a welcome return to the repertoire after a wonderful response last year and the dance legend Lar Lubovitch is in the studios rehearsing Concerto Six Twenty-Two.

Dutch dance master Hans van Manen has created more than 100 short classical ballets during his illustrious 60 year career with, amongst many others, Nederlands Dans Theater and the Dutch National Ballet. Northern Ballet dancers will be performing van Manen's Concertante, a classical ballet inspired by and set to Frank Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante.
