Join Northern Ballet this summer for a week of exciting dance and look at the city of Leeds from a whole new angle. Our Dance in the City summer school takes place from 22–26 August and offers a new perspective on Leeds through creative dance sessions which will have you dancing in the streets. Based in the heart of the city at Northern Ballet on Quarry Hill our state-of-the art dance studios provide an inspirational setting for all aspiring dancers.
Last Thursday saw a spectacular end to a 5 week project with Kippax Ash Tree Primary. Funded by Creative Partnerships through Cape UK, the aim of the project was to look at how dance could be used to build trust and co-operation between the children in two year 4 classes.
At the end of March Northern Ballet played host to nearly 500 children from all around Leeds as paart of the START project. The project, supported by the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts, enables young people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to access the arts, to take part in dance activities and to visit local theatres. In this podcast you can hear their feedback on their day with us and see lots of photos of them taking part.
Some of the 470 young people who are involved in the START project have given us feedback on our Days of Dance which took place at Northern Ballet at the end of March. The START project, supported by the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts, enables young people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to access the arts, to take part in dance activities and to visit local theatres.
The first of three taster sessions has taken place at our previous home in West Park. This is our second wheel chair dance project in partnership with Artforms. The taster sessions have been set up to give young wheelchair users in Leeds an opportunity to be creative and experience the freedom of movement and dance in a safe environment.

RAD graduate Sarah Hearn spent 3 weeks with the Learning team to gain an insight into Dance Education. She tells us about her experience...
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been traveling up to Durham on a Wednesday to work with The Flex Dance Company. Run by TIN Arts, The Flex is a company of 9 artists with learning disabilities who come together to create, devise and perform new contemporary dance work. TIN Arts is quite an inspirational organisation who deliver arts programmes for people of all ages and abilities over the North east so for me it’s a brilliant opportunity to work other experienced artists who are experts in this field. I was immediately made to feel very welcome and quickly got to know everyone.
Over the last couple of weeks Sophie Alder (Dance Education Officer) has been visiting Shepherds Lane Children’s Centre in Leeds working with the pupils to explore the tale of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ through music and dance.
