Northern Ballet's
50th Anniversary Appeal

Help us to take new ballets from the studio to the stage!

Throughout 2019 and 2020, we are celebrating 50 years of Northern Ballet's dedication to creating new and innovative productions and are asking for your support to help us continue engaging with audiences for many years to come.

Raising the curtain on original and exciting new ballets

We need your help to create our future as we look forward to the next 50 years of Northern Ballet.

Over the past five decades the Company have used their unrivalled blend of classical ballet and dramatic storytelling to breathe life into well-known stories in unexpected ways. Classic Northern Ballet titles include A Simple Man, The Great Gatsby and Dracula. In 2020 we are thrilled to bring two new, full-length productions, Geisha and Merlin, to the stage as well as another exceptional new children's ballet.

In 2021 we will be expanding our Digital Dance platform with the creation of exciting new dance films.

Double the impact of your donation

All donations up to a grand total of £30,000 will be matched £1 for £1 by one of our trustees, helping your donation go even further in support of Northern Ballet's new work.

From concept to creation

It costs us over £500,000 each year to create new ballets and revive past productions for our audiences nationwide. Donate today and help us continue to create and stage one original ballet every year with new music, choreography, costumes and sets. Tap the images to find out more.

Wigs & Make-up

Wigs and make-up bring characters to life and help tie a show to a specific period or setting. When using synthetic wigs, the individual hairs are hand-knotted to create a hairline which looks natural on each dancer. Costing between £250 and £900 each, your donation of £250 could help towards the cost of creating a new wig.

Costumes

The process from receiving the final design for a costume through to creation and fitting takes over three months. £1,500 could help create one Samurai outfit for Geisha.

Pointe Shoes

Each year our dancers use up to 3,000 pairs of pointe shoes collectively. £40 could equip one of our dancers with pointe shoes for a single performance and £15 could buy one pair of men's ballet flats for a performance of Merlin.

Music

It costs up to £50,000 to create new music for each ballet. Each new production requires at least seven rehearsals. £3,000 could fund one rehearsal for Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Choreography

Every new production takes many weeks of rehearsal to create. £27,500 could cover one week's rehearsal for a new ballet.

Access For All

Our Let’s Dance project gives young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families, the opportunity to take part in dance and photography workshops which they may not usually have access to. At the end of the project, the families are invited to watch a Northern Ballet performance. £55 could pay for one ticket for a young person with a life-limiting illness to attend a live performance.

Special Effects & Lighting

Around 300 individual lights are rigged for every production to help set the scene. £20,000 could help us create special effects and magic for Merlin.

Sets

The process of designing, building and installing a new set takes 12 months from the start of the project to the opening night performance. £1,000 could buy enough paint to create one backdrop for Merlin or Geisha.

Digital

Each new short film needs dancers, a choreographer, a director, a director of photography, camera operators, a lighting crew, a composer and an editor. £15,000 would help to cover the cost of creating a new short film for our digital dance platform.
