Fit for a Queen Costume Appeal

This spring we are touring our sensational new ballet based on the life and times of Queen Victoria, and as part of our preparations leading up to the world première, our supporters helped us by donating to our Costume Appeal.

As with any great story, our costumes are an integral part of our dancers getting into character. But as well as looking regal, they must be stretchy, sturdy and sustainable to last over 55 performances of Victoria when on tour throughout the UK.

Indeed, each and every donation we have received so far have helped us to purchase the fabrics, detailing and decoration needed to make the exquisite sketches of our Set & Costume Designer Steffen Aarfing leap off the page.

“It’s important for us to find the right balance between costumes created for movement and what will stand out on stage, as this is what makes a memorable production.

For the female dancers we make use of a lot of soft fabrics such as silk and chiffon as these have flexible properties and the costumes are enhanced by the theatre lighting.

Similarly, for the male dancers we tend to go for woollen mixed fabrics, so they don’t feel too restricted when performing”.
