Last week, Northern Ballet took one of the world’s most famous stages by storm as it performed on the Royal Opera House’s mainstage for the first time in the Company’s history. Invited by Director of The Royal Ballet, Kevin O’Hare, to perform as part of Kenneth MacMillan: A National Celebration, Northern Ballet performed the renowned dance maker’s Gloria to a rapturous reception.
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Kenneth MacMillan’s death, Kenneth MacMillan: A National Celebration saw the UK’s five leading ballet companies unite under one roof to perform work by one of ballet’s most influential choreographers. The turn of Leeds-based Northern Ballet fell on 26 and 27 October as the Company performed Gloria in a triple bill which also featured The Royal Ballet in The Judas Tree, and members of four of the UK companies in Elite Syncopations.
Having never before performed work by the inimitable Kenneth MacMillan, Northern Ballet’s first introduction took place just three weeks earlier when the Company performed three of his short ballets at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre.
Following their Royal Opera House debut, Northern Ballet has been inundated with positive reviews from both audiences and critics alike; being awarded a coveted five stars in The Stage, and four stars in The Times and The Daily Telegraph, who described the performance as ‘a stirring debut…terrific’.
Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE said:
‘It is an incredible honour to have been invited to take part in Kenneth MacMillan: A National Celebration, to be able to perform Kenneth MacMillan’s work for the first time and to make our Royal Opera House mainstage debut. This celebration not only served to commemorate the life of an extraordinary choreographer but also marked an important moment in Northern Ballet’s history. I would like to thank Kevin O’Hare and Lady MacMillan for this opportunity. To be able to introduce some of Kenneth MacMillan’s work into our repertoire and present it on such a world-famous stage was a fantastic feeling for the whole company and to be recognised with such amazing feedback demonstrates the level at which our company is performing, and indeed the standard of cultural offering we are producing from the north.’
