Telling Tales with Northern Ballet

Northern Ballet’s Easter Course is off to a cracking start this week with 55 children coming from all over the region, and some from as far away as London, to learn how to tell stories through dance.

This year the sell-out course for children aged 6 to 14 years old is inspired by two hugely popular Northern Ballet productions, Ugly Duckling and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Over four days participants take part in a daily ballet class and work creatively with partners and in groups at Northern Ballet’s award-winning studios in the heart of Leeds.

They will work with Northern Ballet dance artists to develop their dance technique and artist Phil Minns who will deliver physical theatre and characterisation workshops to help improve drama and performance skills.  Through these classes and workshops the participants will be encouraged to create their own production which they will perform to friends and family at the end of the week.

Sophie Alder, Northern Ballet dance artist, says: ‘We are delighted to be working with Phil Minns for this year’s course as it will give the participants a whole new dimension to their dancing, as they learn how to use their bodies and faces to express character through their movement.  This is our third ‘sell-out’ course with many children coming back year after year and so it is great to know that they enjoy the course and get so much out of it.’

The Easter Course, which Northern Ballet has run annually for the past ten years, helps young people learn more about dance and theatre and encourages an interest in live performance.  It is a unique opportunity to learn new skills, be inspired and meet like-minded people with the same passion for dance and drama.
